A dental crown is a cap, virtually identical to a natural tooth, placed over a broken, damaged, or decayed tooth to restore its appearance, strength, and function.A dental crown can be made of a variety of materials, including metal, porcelain, and composite options, and you can discuss which one is right for you with your dentist at
Alamo Dental Excellence during your consultation.
Dental crowns usually cover the entire tooth to the gum line when cemented into place, but some types of crowns, like Inlays and Onlays made of dental bonding, are subtler adjustments to the tooth.Inlays are small caps of dental bonding that can be made to support your teeth and are placed within small weaknesses in the teeth. Onlays are made of similar materials to inlays but are placed over the top of a tooth to support it, though Onlays cover only part of the tooth, as opposed to a true crown that covers the entire tooth.
Common uses for dental crowns include:
Crowns can also be used to make cosmetic adjustments to your smile, and can sometimes save a tooth that has become so decayed that it can’t support a filling.
Our Once your dentist has examined your tooth and determined a crown is the best course of action, they anesthetize the tooth and surrounding area, so you’re comfortable throughout the procedure. Then your dentist shaves down the affected tooth into a position to support the crown; you’ll probably feel some pressure during this, but it should not be painful.
Your dentist then takes a mold of the tooth the crown will protect. Depending on the material you choose for your crown, it can take several weeks to construct. If this is the case, you’ll get a temporary crown in the meantime. When the construction of your crown is complete, your dentist permanently cements it in place, completing the restoration of your tooth.
